INTERVIEW WITH BARBARA EVANS, BRCGS CONSULTANT

Le Marché has a AA rating with BRCGS, a Global Food Safety Standard initially founded in 1996 by retailers wanting to harmonise food safety standards across the supply chain. This involves putting in place high standards that go over and above our legal requirements for managing food safety and an annual audit to ensure we meet all those requirements. For several years, we have partnered with the wonderful consultant Barbara Evans of BeSafe Ltd.

“In a nutshell, BRCGS is a globalised food safety standard. It’s industry recognised, incorporates legal food safety requirements and then goes over and above to ensure the highest of food safety standards. Every food safety business is required to have a documented food safety system. What they do, how they do it and documents to show that they actually do what they say. BRCGS certification is a badge of excellence that gives customers confidence when they buy from Le Marché.

I specialise in food safety and health and safety within food wholesale businesses. My clients know what they are doing with fruit and veg but may not understand the finer points of the law so get me in to give a helping hand. I act as a translator – we look at what the requirements are and look at what they are doing and make the two come together.

Me and my husband enjoy cooking at home and make yearly visits to Michelin-starred restaurants in London - many of whom work with Le Marché. My clients sell so much you don’t see in the supermarkets. I love seeing new produce and what’s in season. Apart from working with some great clients, I learn what’s good and how best to use it!”
